Madison -- Working until the last moment Thursday, Gov. Tommy G. Thompson signed into law the last bill of his 14-year tenure, providing an $11.5 million bailout for BadgerCare, one of his pet projects.

The money was needed to keep the popular health insurance program for the working poor in business through the end of the fiscal year on June 30.

"It was absolutely crucial that we got this money approved quickly, so we can continue to help Wisconsin's working families," Thompson said, minutes before he resigned to become President Bush's secretary of health and human services.
