Grade inflation troubles universities

Some in academia are looking for ways to change system

Boston -- Among traditions at Harvard University, the Gentleman's C has long rivaled crimson, crew and the final clubs. But no longer. Now, some say, it's the Gentleman's A.

Grade inflation appears to be so rampant at Harvard that a well- known government professor, Harvey C. Mansfield, has declared war on the grading system, determined to show that many students receive higher grades than they have truly earned.

Mansfield is telling his political philosophy students that he will give them two marks this term: One will go on their transcripts ...
