Betsy Cukla, a former botanical illustrator, knows when enough
is enough when it comes to decorating cookies. The result is a
delicate-looking piece of edible art. "We feel that cookies should
be cookies and not sugary monuments," she says. "Emphasize the
cookie, don't kill it."
Using high-quality food colorings, bronzing powders, colored
sugars and meringue icing, she'll dress a ballerina cookie in a
beautiful sky-blue tutu, a pair of toe shoes, a gold hair ribbon and
a touch of blush. With an icing tip, she'll give a skater a white
meringue jacket, then dust him with a snowy layer of white sugar.
Using a straw, Cukla makes indentations in Christmas-tree-shape
dough in places where ...
