Don't blame drug companies for Medicare costs

A funny thing happened recently at a Washington conference investigating pharmaceutical prices: Key experts concluded that prescription drug prices are not the problem politicians make them to be.

The conference was sponsored by the Council on the Economic Impact of Health System Change and featured top experts in health policy invited to present papers on "The Economics of Prescription Drug Pricing."

The lead speaker, Princeton professor of economics Uwe Reinhardt, said that "while there is, of course, bellyaching over drug costs," his analysis shows they "just aren't that big of a deal."
