Madness, pathos, passion! Undeserved neglect, and then, at long,
long last, glorious vindication! Fabulous celebrity! Huge amounts
of money!
No wonder "Van Gogh's Van Goghs: Masterpieces From the Van Gogh
Museum, Amsterdam" is the exhibition of the year.
It isn't just its paintings that have made the show a hit, for
compared with van Gogh's best works, many of those on view at the
National Gallery of Art are sort of second-rate. Nor is "Van Gogh's
Van Goghs" a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. Many of its oils have
been to Washington before. No, what makes this show so big is that
it's more than just an art show. It's a psychodrama.
