The same La Plata High School boys soccer team that played
spoiler a year ago found no magic to overcome Thomas Stone's
tradition of success Tuesday at Stone's Alumni Stadium. The Cougars
defeated the Warriors, 3-1, before more than 350 fans to win the
Maryland 3A South regional final and advance to the state tournament
for the 13th time in 23 years and the sixth time this decade.
Stone reached the state finals in 1991 and won its lone
championship in 1996, when five of this year's members played on
varsity as underclassmen.
"It's all about tradition for us, about playing with heart,"
said Thomas Stone junior Jimmy Dade, who played on the 1996 team.
