Family seeking asylum in South Korea

Beijing -- Seven members of a North Korean family on Tuesday took refuge in a U.N. office in China, seeking asylum in South Korea and world attention for the plight of thousands who have fled famine in the North.

The family members entered the Beijing office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and said they were afraid of being deported, said UNHCR regional chief Colin Mitchell.

Mitchell said the family members appeared to be genuinely at risk of persecution if they returned to North Korea. "We can see they had serious concerns for their safety," he told reporters.
