Fair animal of the day: While most of its breed is destined for
chops and stew, Matt Glewen's Hampshire sheep are destined for
breeding.
Glewen, 44, was busy Sunday in the sheep building grooming his
Hampshires -- the washing and clipping started on Thursday -- in
preparation for open-class judging today. His lambs and ewes go up
against a lot of foreign competition, from places like Minnesota and
even Illinois.
"It just happens in our breed, we don't have a lot of real
aggressive breeding in Wisconsin, so there's a lot of breeders from
out of state," said Glewen, of New Holstein in Calumet County.
