Midwest farmers have unfair advantage

The Journal Sentinel's editorial opposing the Northeast Dairy
Compact was predictably shortsighted. Predictable, because the
compact undermines Wisconsin's unfair dominance in the dairy industry
and shortsighted, because Wisconsin farmers may need similar
protection to fight suburban sprawl.
Sprawl results in higher property taxes; noise and odor laws that
limit farming practices; higher production costs; and the loss of
farmers' political clout to ever more numerous suburban residents --
all of which make farming less profitable and farmland more
susceptible to development, as the Northeast has found out over ...
