Companies trim back holiday parties

Some shift approach from revelry to charity

Last year, employees at Wisconsin Paperboard Corp. toasted the holidays with a grand party at an upscale restaurant, complete with dinner, live music, party favors and even door prizes.

This year, employees are on their own for holiday hoopla.

"We're not celebrating," said Converse Smith, the company's general manager. "This is a period of time where you keep your powder dry and you conserve as much capital as you can because money is not rolling in the door."
