Bill to end caucuses goes to governor

Assembly passes measure but can't agree on new staffing

Madison -- A bill to eliminate partisan caucuses in the Legislature is on its way to Gov. Scott McCallum after the Assembly, after a bout of political mistrust, backed it on an 86-8 vote Wednesday.

The measure is a key part of a deal among legislative leaders and the state Ethics and Elections boards to end the caucuses, impose forfeitures and reform a system dogged by allegations of improper campaigning at taxpayer expense.

McCallum, who has been critical of the caucuses, intends to sign the bill.
