New generation of Claritin gets approval from FDA

New York -- The Food and Drug Administration gave Schering-Plough Corp. an early Christmas present last week when it finally approved its second-generation allergy medication Clarinex after a year. But whether it is a gift that keeps on giving remains a matter of debate.

Clarinex is the successor drug to Claritin, Schering's top- selling drug. Claritin sales reached $3 billion last year, nearly one- third of Schering's revenue of $9.2 billion.
