Hole shot in Alaska pipeline
Thousands of gallons of oil spew out

Anchorage, Alaska -- A man fired a bullet into the trans-Alaska
pipeline, causing a large oil spill and forcing the line to shut
down, authorities said.
Daniel Carson Lewis, 37, was arrested Thursday, four hours after
the leak was discovered, and charged with criminal mischief in the
incident. It was the first time the 4-foot-diameter steel pipeline
had ever been pierced by a bullet.
State Police had no motive for the shooting but said Lewis had a
long criminal record and had been drinking.
"It does not appear to be an act of terrorism," trooper spokesman
Tim DeSpain said.
