Bill would let retired officers carry concealed weapons

Madison -- The state Assembly on Thursday passed a bill allowing retired police officers to continue carrying concealed weapons, but only after legislators debated whether to broaden the measure to include all citizens.

The concealed weapon proposal passed 87-10, and supporters hailed it as a proactive way to deter crime.

"By allowing retired law enforcement officials to exercise this right, it adds an extra measure of safety in society," said Rep. Mark Pettis (R-Hertel), a main author of the bill.
