Vancouver -- They were ordered to hand over their poppies while security guards removed the pins and returned the red flowers to indignant air passengers.

The reason? The pins in passengers' Remembrance Day poppies, an international symbol of respect for war veterans, were sharp, and so a potential danger to fellow passengers and crew members on the awaiting flights.

The poppy seizures were reported at airports in Toronto and Vancouver this week and sparked a flurry of angry complaints from passengers whose pins were seized at security gates. Some complained the guards took the flowers ...
