D.C. Mayor Marion Barry and Prince George's County Executive
Wayne K. Curry will team up today in an effort to obtain $100
million in federal money to transform 22 scruffy corridors in the
District and Maryland into revitalized communities.
In the next three months, the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development will create 20 additional "empowerment zones"
across the country. This designation will pump $100 million directly
into each community and will provide tax incentives and other grants
to businesses that move into the impoverished areas.
