Madison -- It took the city council four years and 42 drafts, but it finally passed a workplace smoking ban.

Under the ordinance, smoking in most private workplaces in Madison is prohibited. People who work in their own homes are not subject to the law.

The new law goes into effect on March 1, 2002. Small businesses have until Jan. 1, 2003, to comply.

The council approved the law Tuesday on a 13-5 vote.

"Madison took a big step to catch up with the rest of the country," anti-smoking activist Ira Sharenow said.
