Health officials are monitoring 14 people in the United States who may have been exposed to a mysterious illness of Asian origin that has afflicted 167 people around the world and killed at least four.

At least 10 of the 14 do not have all the symptoms of severe acute respiratory syndrome, said Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials are still unsure about the symptoms of the other four patients, she said during a conference call with reporters.

"We're not highly suspicious of any of these cases, but we want to make sure we're not missing the first patient" to appear in the U.S., Gerberding said.
