Article: Los Alamos lab audit another blow to UC Federal inspector says $80,000 in missing laptops went uninvestigated

WASHINGTON -- More than $80,000 worth of laptop computers went missing at Los Alamos National Laboratory last year, yet the unexplained absences sparked no inquiries at the nuclear weapons facility, a federal audit released Monday found.

The highly critical report from Department of Energy Inspector General Gregory Friedman found that the New Mexico laboratory has done an "inadequate" job keeping track of its 5,000 laptop computers - - possibly placing classified or sensitive nuclear weapons information at risk.

The report is the latest in a series of blows to the University of California, which has been fighting an uphill battle to hold onto its contract to manage Los Alamos.
