Article: Alameda County Medical Center warns of 160 layoffs

As many as 160 employees of the Alameda County Medical Center could be laid off this year as officials grapple with a deficit that could be as much as $25 million.

The grim news was presented to the medical center board Monday night by Chief Executive Officer Ken Cohen.

The latest funding problems follow an announcement two months ago that the medical center expects to lose $7 million in federal disproportionate share money for hospitals that serve poor people.

"Our general conclusion is we're losing $1 million a month on operation of the medical center," Cohen said.
