One week after reaching an agreement to host a unified India Independence Day festival, two competing factions of the Tri-City area's Indian-American community broke off talks, saying they will hold separate festivals in Fremont and Union City.

Organizers from three Indian-American groups last week said a joint festival in Fremont would bridge a growing divide in the community and allow the groups to consolidate their efforts and funding.

Control and money appear to have been the driving force behind the split, some organizers said.
