ALAMEDA CIVIC LIGHT OPERA rounds out its season with Steph- en
Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street," opening
Friday. Themes of love and revenge will resonate with audience
members, says director Jeff Teague. "I think this is Sondheim's best
piece," says Teague. "The music expresses the characters' emotions
and the plot very well. It draws you in." Of course, he adds, the
subject matter is unique. To say the least. The setting is 19th
century London. Sweeney Todd, a barber, returns to his old
neighborhood after serving 15 years in prison for a crime he didn't
commit. He is looking for vengeance and won't stop short of murder.
