'S EABISCUIT" the movie is expected to draw crowds wherever it is
showing this weekend in the Bay Area.The improbable Triple
Crown winner thoroughbred
brought throngs to their feet
during his frantic racing days
in the late 1930s, just before
the war.
Owner Charles S. Howard
(portrayed by Jeff Bridges in
the film) also was a larger
than life character who left his
mark on the Oakland skyline,

veal.
Howard (born in 1880) got
his start as a self-made man
across the Bay as a bicycle re
pairman, following a stint in
the U.S. Army during the
Spanish-American conflict.
He soon gave up bicycles
for the new-fangled contrap
