Financial problems plaguing the Alameda

County Medical Center -- which includes High

land Hospital in Oakland -- are so vast that only

a large influx of cash will ensure its survival,

according to a new independent audit.

What's more, a plan to close outpatient clinics

and the trauma center at Highland to help offset a

$45.7 million deficit won't likely save the county

much money because it could drive the few

paying customers away and increase demand

among the very poor at the emergency room, the

audit found.

mechanism for an infusion of funds," said Kerry
