UNBELIEVABLE as it may seem, ancient Peruvian fishermen, 1950s
teenager Gidget and artist Andy Warhol share something in common:
Each in some way made a contribution to surfing.
Astride floating bundles of reeds called caballitos, or little
horses, fishermen as early as 3000 BC rode the waves off the coast of
Peru. In 1957, Malibu-area teenager Kathy "Gidget" Kohner helped
popularize the surfing subculture in the United States after her
father published a novel about her aquatic adventures. And Warhol
cast his camera lens on the surfing lifestyle in a series of early
1980s black-and-white photographs made at his Long Island summer
home.
