OAKLAND -- Transgender people will be protected from
discrimination under an ordinance adopted unanimously by the Oakland
City Council on Tuesday night.
Oakland is set to join Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and
Boston by widening its sexual orientation anti-discrimination
ordinance to include gender identity or sexual expression in order to
protect transgender people.
Final approval of the ordinance is set for Jan. 6.
Advocates said the ordinance, which covers public facilities as
well as restaurants, shops and cafes, was a long over-due first step,
and called on the City Council to re-establish the Oakland Human
Rights Commission to enforce the ordinance.
