Article: Police ask public not to fire guns on New Year's Hayward officer: 'There is simply no safe way to celebrate with a gun'

Hayward and San Leandro police and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office have issued their annual warning to misguided holiday revelers about the dangers of celebratory gunfire on New Year's Eve.

"There is simply no safe way to celebrate with a gun," said Hayward police Lt. Darryl McAllister. Shots fired into the air must come down somewhere, he explained, echoing the sentiments of other local officials, and bullets fired toward the ground can ricochet unpredictably.

Not only is the activity hazardous, but under state law, the grossly negligent discharge of a firearm is a felony.
