BERKELEY -- On his first day as a college student this fall, Leon
Powe walked into a freshman sociology lecture hall at Cal, took one
look at the herd of his 600 classmates and made a quick U-turn.
"I ran," he said. "I got scared and left."
So what happened? Powe went back the next day and now, with
midterm exams complete, says he's pulling down a B in the class.
On one of his first days of basketball practice last week, Powe
got caught behind a screen as Gabriel Hughes rolled to the basket,
took a pass and went up for a dunk.
Suddenly, Powe was back in the picture and swatted the ball off
the backboard.
For Cal coach Ben Braun, the two moments are linked by a common
thread.
