records state that police had detained Pavon on a 72-hour "5150"
hold -- meaning she was found to be a danger to herself or others.
According to court records, Pavon had bipolar disorder. The
National Institute of Mental Health describes the disorder, also
known as manic-depressive illness, as a brain disorder that causes
unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy and ability to function. It
affects more than 2 million American adults.
Pavon, who had moved to the East Bay from South Dakota in August,
had been living with her sister and her sister's boyfriend in San
Leandro. They called police on the morning of Nov. 18 to report that
Pavon had been behaving strangely as ...
