Biotechnology firm Bio-Rad Laboratories, which makes two-thirds of the mad cow tests sold worldwide, said Thursday it won approval to use its rapid mad cow tests in the United States.

The U.S. is stepping up its mad cow testing this year after the brain-wasting disease was found in the country for the first time in December. It's estimated that about 400,000 U.S. cattle will be tested in the next 12 to 18 months, up from 20,000 last year.

Bio-Rad made around 8 million of the 12 million mad cow tests sold worldwide last year, accounting for $100 million of the Hercules firm's $1 billion in 2003 sales. Bio-Rad's mad cow test can give results in four hours and is almost 100 percent accurate, ...
