WHEN Alex Rodriguez bid adieu to the Texas Rangers earlier this
year and donned the New York Yankees' pinstripes, he joined a century-
old roster that includes such legends as Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and
Joe DiMaggio.
But the 34-inch piece of timber A-Rod carries to the plate in the
March 30 season opener against Tampa Bay will link him to an even
older chapter in baseball. The American League MVP's stick of choice
is a Louisville Slugger C271, and it was 120 years ago that a 17-
year-old Kentucky woodworker used a steam-powered lathe to turn the
original Louisville Slugger bat.
