Article: Sharks' key win clinches playoffs San Jose pulls away from Red Wings in third period

SAN JOSE -- The Sharks clinched a playoff spot, but that was an afterthought to what San Jose had accomplished Tuesday night.

At the beginning of the year, a trip to the playoffs would have been enough to satisfy most of the San Jose faithful, after a last- place finish in the Pacific Division in 2002-03.

But after thumping Western Conference leading Detroit 5-2, the Sharks lead the Pacific Division by three points over Dallas with six games to play and are tied with Colorado for the No.2 seed in the Western Conference playoff race.

Earlier in the night, Chicago rallied to even the score with Colorado in the final 5 minutes of regulation to forge a 2-2 tie.
