He did just about all he could. He drove in the go-ahead runs
in Games 1 and 3 of this World Series only to have the pitchers on
the team give back the leads. He hit .500, 8 for 16 with a home run
off the upper-deck facing at Yankee Stadium and three RBI. Like so
much of what he has done in a brilliant career partially eclipsed by
his franchise's remoteness in the baseball universe, Tony Gwynn's
latest contributions to the San Diego Padres were overlooked in the
New York Yankees' historic drive for victory 125.
Gwynn lingered in the San Diego clubhouse long after the
Padres had lost Game 3 of the World Series, professing optimism but
