AGING members of the "greatest generation" now can see how they will be remembered in the decades and centuries to come. Fifty-nine years after combat ended, the National World War II Memorial opened Thursday, about a month ahead of schedule.

The American Battle Monuments Commission expects 800,000 people to descend on the Mall in Washington, D.C., for the dedication of the $174 million memorial during Memorial Day weekend. In the meantime, the public can roam the grounds and get up close.
