Even as budget cuts are forcing the University of California to
turn students away next year, a new study shows that more graduating
high school students are eligible for admission.
A study released Wednesday by the California Postsecondary
Education Commission shows that 14.4 percent of graduating seniors in
2003 had met UC's admission requirements. In 1996 -- the last year
CPEC conducted a similar study -- 11 percent of graduating seniors
were eligible for UC.
"These results indicate that more and more California high school
students are working hard and excelling at the level needed to
achieve UC eligibility," said UC Provost MRC Greenwood. "They suggest
