Article: Berkeley lab gets new leadership Stanford Nobel laureate named to $350,000-a-year director post

Stanford physicist Steven Chu got the nod Thursday as chief of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, making him the first Asian American and the only Nobel laureate in years to lead a national lab.

Two colleagues from Chu's early career at Bell Laboratories -- University of California President Bob Dynes and outgoing Berkeley lab Director Charles Shank -- said Chu was the obvious choice to lead the lab as the university prepares for an unprecedented challenge to its management there.

"It's a no-brainer, the best candidate we could possibly find," Dynes said. "I defy you to name a more outstanding candidate."
