Stanford physicist Steven Chu got the nod Thursday as chief of
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, making him the first Asian
American and the only Nobel laureate in years to lead a national lab.
Two colleagues from Chu's early career at Bell Laboratories --
University of California President Bob Dynes and outgoing Berkeley
lab Director Charles Shank -- said Chu was the obvious choice to lead
the lab as the university prepares for an unprecedented challenge to
its management there.
"It's a no-brainer, the best candidate we could possibly find,"
Dynes said. "I defy you to name a more outstanding candidate."
Chu's selection was widely endorsed in Washington, in Congress and
at the U.S. ...
