THE byword of the 2004 presidential election suddenly seems to be "values." Webster's defines the word as "the ideals, customs, institutions of a society toward which the people of the group have an effective regard."

Values may be positive, as in education, or negative, as in crime, which pretty much means that everyone has some variety.

Both candidates are now claiming proprietorship over the good kind as they see them, and both claim theirs are shared by most Americans. Both are probably right given the fact that the only real difference is how they would go about instituting them -- values, that is.
