Even as plans to modernize wind farms in Alameda County are
generating controversy and lawsuits, a wind farm operator in
neighboring Contra Costa County has quietly begun junking old
turbines that the company wants to replace with the latest models.
Buena Vista LLC has obtained demolition permits to remove
antiquated electricity-producing windmills from a 2,500-acre wind
farm along Vasco Road between Byron Airport and Vasco caves.
The company proposes to replace them with 38 modern wind turbines
towering 250 feet in the air and capable of producing the same amount
of energy as the 179 machines being removed.
Buena Vista officials did not return calls for comment, but some
