WALKING into San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre during a rehearsal of
"Lennon" is a startling experience.
The lobby is crammed full of boxes and equipment, and the theater
itself looks like a NASA control room. There are banks and banks of
flat-screen computer monitors everywhere as lighting, sound and
technical engineers work out every minute detail of a show that
begins previews next weeks and heads to Broadway after another stop
in Boston.
A giant onstage screen descends and we see an astronaut from the
space shuttle Columbia in the midst of a space walk. John Lennon's
unmistakable voice begins singing "Imagine" as the earth is reflected
in the astronaut's visor.
Then boom! The screen ...
