FREMONT -- Schools need to learn how to deal with sexual and
gender identity issues, and then educate their staff and students,
Sylvia Guerrero told participants in a workshop Saturday.
The mother of murdered transgender teenager Gwen Araujo was the
speaker at the training session, held at the Fremont Adult School.
"(Gwen) didn't have many cheerleaders behind her. And where are
kids at most of the time? School," Guerrero said of the hardships
faced by teens who deal with issues of their own gender identity on
top of those that come from being a teenager.
"(It was difficult) for Gwen to just wake up every morning trying
to be herself," she said.
