OAKLAND -- Well before the recent spate of pit bull attacks throughout the Bay Area made headlines, Robert Edwards started carrying mace while walking around his North Oakland neighborhood to ward off pit bulls running loose in the area.

"Pit bulls are not little cuddly creatures that you bring into your home and (expect) to be loyal 100 percent of the time," said Edwards, 56. "It's the 1 percent of the time when they go berserk and can become vicious killing machines."

Edwards' dog, Audrey, a bichon frise, was attacked by three pit bulls in February when he and his pet were on the front porch.
