NEWARK -- Assistant City Manager John Becker appears to be a shoo-
in for the position of city manager now that Jim Reese, the other
assistant city manager, has announced his plans to move east.
Becker and Reese were promoted to assistant city manager in
January 2002, and the two were being groomed as the next top city
employee, said City Manager Al Huezo, who will retire in December.
Mayor Dave Smith said in January that if he had to make a decision
right then, he would want the job to go to Becker or Reese, and Huezo
said Friday that he now expects the council to promote Becker.
The previous two city managers, Huezo and Paul Tong, were promoted
after serving as assistant city manager, ...
