Article: Pit bull ownership loses its bite

OAKLAND -- These are the kinder, gentler pit bulls. The ones who sit and stay and smile big slobbery grins. Better behaved than lots of people out there.

Some of these more docile dogs showed off their obedience skills at a news conference Wednesday at the East Bay SPCA in Oakland, to kick off a pilot education and adoption program called Pit Bull Hall.

"This entire year has been all about the problems with pit bulls, with owners, with shelters. This is about solutions," said Kirsten Park of the East Bay SPCA. "The idea is to increase adoptions of temperament-tested pit bulls and educate current and prospective pit bull owners on what it means to be a responsible owner."
