Article: Tugboat crew members sue Caltrans for overtime

OAKLAND -- A group of tugboat crew members who have worked on the Bay Bridge and six other public works bridge construction projects are suing Caltrans and tugboat owners, saying they have been stiffed on overtime pay since 2001.

"These guys work hard, it's complex work, and it's dangerous," said Gary Goyette, plaintiffs' attorney.

The lawsuit claims normal shifts for tugboat crew members last 12 hours or more "and a common schedule involves seven consecutive days of work."

More than 200 tug crew members are potential plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court.
