PHOENIX -- For those who grow up in Rapid City, S.D., there aren't
many months to play baseball, and there aren't many locals from the
state to look up to as role models.
Dave Collins was the best position player the state ever produced.
Mark Ellis was too young ever to watch Collins play, but he knows him
well.
The field where Ellis played Little League baseball was named
after Collins. Ellis ended up playing for the same American Legion
coach as Collins did, and heard many stories about what a great
athlete Collins was.
Collins, now the first-base coach for Colorado, and Ellis were
able to meet this week and get to know each other a little.
This year, Ellis should pass Collins ...
