Article: Active San Leandro community member Leroy Woods dies at 100

SAN LEANDRO -- Leroy "Roy" Woods did a lot things in the past century.

As an active San Leandro community member for 75 years, Woods served on the San Leandro City Council and Planning Commission in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

He also managed to find love twice in his lifetime -- married to his first wife, Velma, for 40 years and to his second wife, Elaine, for 34 years.

Woods, who was born in Avon, Ill., died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, in Hayward. He was 100.

According to family members, Woods leased a service station for many years when he and his family first moved from Illinois to San Leandro in the 1930s, and then started bartending as a side job in the evenings. He then became the ...
