Article: Dellums, De La Fuente lead Oakland race

OAKLAND -- One of the most hotly contested mayoral elections in recent memory remained just that early today as results slowly trickled in.

Early results showed Ron Dellums leading Ignacio De La Fuente by about 2,200 votes, with absentee ballots and a few precincts counted. Nancy Nadel was trailing both candidates by more than 5,000 votes.

Touted as the most important mayoral election in Oakland in nearly a decade, concerns about public safety, education and development defined the race among former congressman Dellums, city council president De La Fuente and councilmember Nadel.
