MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The U.S. Open champion was just standing there, at the entrance to the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, N.Y., where, unusual in this era of pretension and separation, both players and media were headquartered.

Just standing there Monday morning, talking with friends, when a journalist hauling baggage, probably the mental kind as well as the actual, showed up. Geoff Ogilvy pushed open the door.
