MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The U.S. Open champion was just standing
there, at the entrance to the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, N.Y.,
where, unusual in this era of pretension and separation, both players
and media were headquartered.
Just standing there Monday morning, talking with friends, when a
journalist hauling baggage, probably the mental kind as well as the
actual, showed up. Geoff Ogilvy pushed open the door.
Now that's service.
Now that's Geoff Ogilvy, your basic young man next door, if the
next door is one that leads to the road in front the Crowne Plaza as
well as to greatness.
It wasn't supposed to be his Open, certainly. That's how people
will remember this monster of a tournament ...
