FREMONT -- Sri Lanka is sometimes called an island of contradictions: It has some of the most pristine beaches in the world, as well as one of the longest ongoing civil wars.

On his first trip to Sri Lanka -- and his first trip outside the United States, for that matter -- Aldo Zilli of Fremont saw those contradictions firsthand.

Zilli, an international affairs graduate student at California State University, Sacramento, marveled at the great rock fortress of Sigiriya, yet he was unable to travel through parts of the country because of the deteriorating security situation.
