WHEN THE REQUEST came in for chocolate chip scones, I raced, I
mean I walked over to search our food section's well-stocked cookbook
collection. Scones and high tea go hand in hand, so my first thought
was to check cookbooks by Nigella Lawson and other popular British
chefs. While several featured traditional scone recipes, there wasn't
a chocolate chip in sight.
Broadening my search, I began thumbing through our baking section -
- and there it was in one of my favorites: "The Baker's Dozen
Cookbook" (Morrow, $40), a collection of recipes contributed by many
of the Bay Area's top baking experts. In a recipe for buttermilk
